Why Do I Keep Repeating the Same Patterns?

We often repeat the same patterns because they are familiar ways of thinking, responding, or protecting ourselves that we learned earlier in life. Even when a pattern is no longer working for us, it can be difficult to change something that has become automatic.

You may recognize the pattern. You keep ending up in similar relationships. Y ou say yes when you want to say no. Y ou avoid conflict and then become resentful. Y ou take responsibility for everyone else's feelings, people-please, overthink, or find yourself responding to certain situations the same way over and over again.

At some point you find yourself asking, “I know I do this, so why do I keep doing it?”

Because recognizing a pattern and understanding where it came from are two different things.

Where Do These Patterns Come From?

Many of the ways we operate as adults were shaped much earlier in our lives. As children, we learn what gets us approval, what keeps the peace, what makes us feel accepted, and what helps us feel safe or connected. Those experiences can shape the way we respond long after childhood is over. For example, if keeping everyone happy helped you avoid conflict growing up, people-pleasing may feel completely natural as an adult. You may know you need better boundaries while still feeling incredibly uncomfortable when you try to set one. The pattern isn't necessarily who you are. It may be something you learned.

Looking at where a pattern began isn't about blaming your parents or your childhood for everything happening in your life today. It's about understanding what shaped you. This is an important part of inner-child work. We begin recognizing the connection between what we experienced, what we learned from those experiences, and how those beliefs or behaviors may still be showing up in our lives today. Once we understand that connection, we can begin asking a different question: Does this still serve the person I am becoming? You don't have to keep carrying something simply because you've carried it for a long time.

Helping people recognize where their patterns came from and begin creating new ways of responding is a significant part of the work I do through coaching and inner-child work. If you're ready to explore what's underneath the patterns you keep repeating,

I offer a free 20-minute consultation where we can talk about what's coming up for you and whether working together feels like the right fit.
